What Does A Medical Assistant Do?

Medical assistants job duties vary depending on a number of factors including the type of medical assistant, the nature of the facility in which they work, or even the state in which they work.

There are three main types of medical assistants: Administrative, Clerical and Clinical, and each of these come with their own set of typical duties and responsibilities.

Administrative Medical Assistant

An administrative medical assistant handles most of the administrative tasks that are medical related. Many of the assistant’s duties will vary depending on the specific office, however, one can expect to handle some of the following:

  • Updating patient records
  • Some medical billing
  • Calling other hospitals, pharmacies, or physicians
  • Handling medical insurance claim
  • Submitting medical forms
  • Office maintenance

 Clerical Medical Assistant

A clerical medical assistant is responsible for the medical office itself, and would be similar to an administrative assistant type role but in a medical setting. Again, duties will vary depending on the office but you can expect the following in most situations:

  • Scheduling Patient Appointments
  • Light phone work
  • Office supply ordering
  • Computer work such as emailing
  • Running the waiting room

Clinical Medical Assistant

A clinical medical assistant is one that is most hands on when it comes to actually working with patients. Each state has specific laws about what clinical medical assistants can and cant do, but some of their responsibilities typically include:

  • Taking basic patient information
  • Working alongside the physician
  • Collecting samples
  • Recording patient notes on symptoms
  • Sending prescriptions to pharmacies

There are other medical assistants that have specialized training and can perform additional tasks. For example, some medical assistants are able to draw blood (phlebotomy), but it depends on the particular laws in that state.
