Working From Home Tips
If you have always wanted to work at home, but you don’t know if you can do it, read my tips below. I am a successful “work-at-home entrepreneur” and I know how to make it work with an at home business. It’s not easy, I kid you not. You have to work at it day and night, whenever your clients need you, you’ll have odd hours, and unreasonable demands (most of which you put on yourself), but if you are determined, you can make it work. Here are 5 working from home tips:
Tip #1: Don’t quit your day job-yet! This doesn’t mean you won’t need to do this at some point. But survival is the key to leveling so make sure you have the steady income as you are building your dream to create your own business. Also, don’t talk to people at work about the fact that you are starting a business from home. They may tell your employer and if your employer thinks it is distracting you from your regular position with them, or if they fear you will leave soon, you may end us starting your work-at-home career long before you intended to.
Tip #2: Make a business plan. Every successful business has some sort of business plan, a set of goals and a timeline to get there. Even if you deviate from your plan, you still need a plan to follow. The timeline allows you to stay focused on the goal and gives you a deadline on when you should get there.
Tip #3: Create small “TO DO” lists every day. Think of your business plan as your long term project goals, and your daily “TO DO” lists as the smaller incremental tasks it will take to get there. This will keep you focused on the most important things you need to move forward and get the little things done that will take you to where you need to go.
Tip #4: Don’t overextend. Spending too much at first, having too much inventory, or any other extra expenses, debts, or expenditures has killed many a business before it had a chance to get started. Think small first and build your business as you can afford to. Your goal may be to eventually launch a huge company that is on a global level, with multiple offices and suppliers. But, just like in your personal finances, you must live “within your means,” as you grow. So start small but dream big.
Tip #5: Find out what you need to make it work. Talk to other people in a similar field, and find out what it takes to be successful in your chosen niche area. Network with people who can help you and hire independent contractors who can add something to your business. Be sure to have all contractors sign a “no compete” agreement, which requires them to not divulge any “tricks of the trade” to anyone else in the event they leave your company.
These are the first 5 steps of setting up a work-at-home business and some tips in how to make it work for you. Of course, it’s different for everyone, so consider the type of business you have and how these ideas will apply to you and your business.
THE IMPORTANCE OF PLANNING
Most of all, brainstorm! I take some time each night before going to bed to assess the day, the past week, and think about what you need to do next to move ahead. Whether it’s about financial goals, creative goals, or product lines, it’s important to lay aside some planning time. Brian Tracy, a well-known speaker on the subject of “Time Management” suggests that you must set aside some time to do this every week, and that doing so can help you finish a task much faster than if you lay aside no time for planning.
With some planning time, ambition, and a clear focus on what you want to accomplish, you can make it a successful venture too!
