Education, Certification, & Training Required For Basic Supportive Dental Procedures
Unlicensed Dental Assistant
None. Dental assistants in New York can perform some basic supportive dental procedures under the supervision of a licensed dentist.

Expanded Duties Dental Assisting Requirements
Title: NY State Licensed “Certified Dental Assistant”

  • Be a minimum of 17 years of age
  • Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Complete a 1 year degree in dental assisting program that includes at least 200 hours of clinical work experience OR an alternate course of study that includes a minimum of 1000 hours of relevant work experience (must be approved by the New York State Education Department).
  • Pass the national DANB Certified Dental Assistant Exam OR Pass the NYPDA exam along with the RHS and ICE components of the DANB exam

Registered Dental Assistant Requirements

  • Obtain NY State Licensing as a “Certified Dental Assistant”

Radiography Requirements
