Education, Certification, & Training Required For Basic Supportive Dental Procedures
Title: Dental Assistant
None. Dental assistants in New Mexico can perform basic supportive dental procedures under thedirect supervision of a licensed dentist.

Expanded Duties Dental Assisting Requirements
Title: Dental Assistant with state certification in expanded functions

  • Possess DANB Certified Dental Assistant Certification (CDA) OR
  • Meet specific requirements for each specific expanded function

Radiography Requirements
In order to perform dental radiographic procedures and operate dental x-ray equipment in the state of New Mexico, dental assistants be certified. Requirements for certification:

  • Pass written exam on Radiation Health and Safety administered by the state board OR pass the national DANB Radiation Health and Safety exam (RHS exam)
  • Pass the state radiologic clinical exam within 6 month of passing either of the Radiation Health and Safety exam
  • Pass the state take-home jurisprudence exam
  • Apply to the board for certification to perform radiography
