Education, Certification, & Training Required For Basic Supportive Dental Procedures
Title: Dental Assistant

  • Possess current CPR certification

Expanded Duties Dental Assisting Requirements
Title: Licensed Dental Assistant (LDA)

  • Be a Licensed Dental Assistant (LDA)
  • Successfully complete a CODA accredited course in each of the listed expanded functions in the Minnesota’s state dental practice act.

Licensed Dental Assistant Requirements
Title: Licensed Dental Assistant (LDA)

  • Pass the national DANB Certified Dental Assistant Exam (CDA exam)
  • Complete one of the following:
    • Graduate from a Minnesota CODA accredited dental assisting program
    • Graduate from an out-of-state CODA accredited program with additional coursework
    • Graduate from a non-CODA accredited program and complete a Minnesota board approved course in Expanded Functions
    • Complete in-office training and complete a Minnesota board approved course in Expanded Functions
  • Pass the Minnesota Licensure exam
  • Pass the Minnesota Jurisprudence exam
  • Apply for licensing to the board

Note: Minnesota eliminated the Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) designation in favor of the Licensed Dental Assistants (LDA) designation in 2010.
