Education, Certification, & Training Required For Basic Supportive Dental Procedures
Title: On-the-job Trained Dental Assistant (OJT)
No formal education or training is required. However, an On-the-job Trained Dental Assistant (OJT) in Massachusetts must be trained in the dental office under the supervision of a licensed dentist.

Expanded Duties Dental Assisting Requirements
Title: Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA)

  • Possess current DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification
  • Complete a CODA accredited dental assisting program
  • Complete a formal CODA accredited expanded functions training program

Formally Trained Dental Assistant Requirements
Title: Formally Trained Dental Assistant (FTDA)

  • Complete a CODA or NEASC accredited dental assisting program (at least 1 year in duration)

Radiography Requirements
Expanded Function Dental Assistants (EFDA), DANB Certified Dental Assistants (CDA), or Formally Trained Dental Assistants (FTDA) must:

  • Successfully complete a course curriculum that meets CODA radiological techniques and safeguards standards

On-the-Job Trained Dental Assistants (OJT) can also perform dental radiographic procedures but must:

  • Complete a course in radiological techniques and safeguards
  • Pass the DANB Radiation Health and Safety exam (RHS exam) or other Massachusetts board approved exam within 1 year of course completion
