Education, Certification, & Training Required For Basic Supportive Dental Procedures
Title: Dental Assistant
None. Dental assistants in Maine can perform basic supportive dental procedures under the supervision of a licensed dentist.

Note: DANB certified dental assistants (CDA) can perform the following additional functions:

  • Remove sutures with a dentist follow-up appointment within 7-10 days
  • Place temporary fillings in emergency circumstances
  • Remove excess cement from supragingival tooth surfaces

Expanded Duties Dental Assisting Requirements
Title: Expanded Function Dental Assistant

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess current CPR certification
  • Be a current DANB Certified Dental Assistant OR be a current Registered Dental Hygienist
  • Pass a Maine board approved course
  • Receive 90%+ on the Main Board of Dental Examiners’ jurisprudence exam
  • Apply for state Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) certification from the Maine Board of Dental Examiners

Radiography Requirements
Dental assistants must obtain a dental radiography license from the Maine board in order to perform dental radiographic procedures and operate dental x-ray equipment. The licensing requirements are:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Possess current CPR certification
  • Complete one of the following:
    • The DANB Radiation Health and Safety exam (RHS exam )
    • The Certified Dental Assistant exam (CDA exam)
    • Completion a CODA accredited dental radiography course
  • Score 85%+ on the Maine Board of Dental Examiners’ jurisprudence exam
  • Apply for a dental radiography license from the board
