Expanded Duties Dental Assisting Requirements
Title: Dental Assistant qualified in coronal polishing
Dental assistants in Kentucky can perform coronal polishing procedures under the direct supervision of a dentist provided the dental assistant meets the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete an 8 hour CODA accredited course in coronal polishing procedures
  • Submit certification from CODA accredited institute to the Kentucky board

Registered Dental Assistant Requirements
Title: Registered Dental Assistant (RDA)

  • 1 year of dental office experience OR completion of a CODA accredited dental assisting program
  • English comprehension (reading, speaking, writing) level equivalent to at least the 9th grade
  • Sign and submit an Application for Dental Assistant Registration
  • Not be currently subject to disciplinary auction pursuant to KRS Chapter 313
  • Complete a course on the transmission, control, treatment and prevention of AIDS
  • Possess current CPR certification that meets AHA guidelines
  • Pass a criminal background check

Radiography Requirements

  • Pass the national DANB Radiation Health and Safety exam (RHS exam), OR
  • Complete a 6 hour Kentucky board approved course in dental radiography and safety, as well as complete 4 hours of dental radiography technique instruction during employment or alternatively, a Kentucky board approved 4 hour course in radiography technique.
