Education, Certification, & Training Required For Basic Supportive Dental Procedures
Title: Dental Assistant Trainee

  • Apply for registration as a Dental Assistant Trainee with the Iowa Dental Board
  • Receive verification from the Iowa Dental Board of trainee status
  • The trainee’s employer must notify the board within 7 days of the trainee’s initial employment as dental assistant

Expanded Duties Dental Assisting Requirements
Title: Registered Dental Assistant with expanded duties training

  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be registered with the Iowa Dental Board
  • Possess a certificate of registration

Registered Dental Assistant Requirements
Title: Registered Dental Assistant (RDA)

  • Meet one of the following minimum pre-requisites of:
    • Work as a Dental Assistant Trainee for 6 months, OR
    • Possess a minimum of 6 months prior dental assisting experience within the past 2 years, OR
    • Graduate from an accredited dental assisting program
  • Complete an Iowa board approved program as well as the DANB ICE Exam/hazardous materials and jurisprudence within 12 months of employment
  • Possess CPR certification
  • Apply for RDA registration and certificate from the Iowa Dental Board

Radiography Requirements
In order to perform dental radiographic procedures under the general supervision of a dentist in Iowa, the dental assistant must

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold a current registration certificate
  • Active radiography qualification from the Iowa Dental Board

In order to qualify to for radiography qualification, the dental assistant must:

  • Be an active Dental Assistant Trainee or Registered Dental Assistant, graduate of an accredited dental assisting program, or a licensed nurse and providing dental care as a dental nurse.
  • Demonstrate successful completion of an Iowa board approved program in dental radiography within the prior 2 years before the application.
  • Demonstrate successful completion of an Iowa board approved exam in dental radiography, including the national DANB Radiation Health and Safety exam (RHS exam)
  • Apply for a Certificate of Qualification in Dental Radiology from the Iowa Dental Board
